Please Welcome the Latest WorldatWork Blog
May 15, 2008 — Blogs are proliferating around here like someone’s variable pay depends on them. Please let me introduce the newest arrival, Compensation Conundrum, launched earlier this week by my colleagues JC Kovac and Jim Stoeckmann. JC has asked me to give them a plug, so here I am, in case you’ve missed their first entry.
I’ve just this minute opened up their first essay, only to discover to my dismay (mixed with some amusement) that the word “Conundrum” is misspelled in the banner headline. That gaffe will be fixed by the time you read this, but I can’t resist pointing out that conundrum happens to be one of my favorite words, so I treat it with the utmost respect. Just this week, during a presentation in Houston at the Mayor’s Flex in the Cityconference, I myself described workplace flexibility as the “conundrum of the work-life portfolio”.
So what’s a conundrum? Webster provides three options:
1) a riddle whose answer is a pun;
2) a problem having only a conjectural answer, or
3) (my favorite usage of the term) an intricate and difficult problem.
So, I encourage all of you to follow Jim and JC’s thought-provoking writings, which, hopefully, will include some compensation riddles and puns along with the conjecture in which many of us bloggers inevitably engage. They do, after all, explain that this will be a different blog experience, so this promises to be fun!
