Summit to Address Work-Life Effectiveness in Arizona Businesses

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – An upcoming summit for business executives, human resource professionals, educators and academics will address the successes and challenges facing businesses in Arizona: optimizing the ability of the workforce to effectively manage work and home responsibilities.

The daylong summit will take place on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. Journalists interested in attending may inquire about a complimentary press pass.

A key topic addressed during the summit will be the contribution of work-life effectiveness to overall business success. One panelist discussing this topic is Kathie Lingle, Director of the Alliance for Work-Life Progress, a Scottsdale-based association affiliated with WorldatWork. “With a workforce that is aging as well as becoming more ethnically diverse, employers will want to know what strategies, beyond compensation and benefits, they can implement to attract, retain and motivate the talent required for the success of their enterprise,” said Ms. Lingle.

Other panelists discussing the impact of work-life effectiveness at the summit include:

  • Carolyn Pitre Wright, Work-Life Programs Manager for the State of Arizona
  • Dr. Shelley MacDermid from Purdue University
  • Dr. Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes from the Boston College Center for Work and Family
  • Sharon Klun, Director U.S. Work-Life Initiatives at Accenture.

Linda Strock, a research administrator for the Arizona Department of Economic Security will provide a snapshot of Arizona’s changing workforce demographics, which will frame a discussion about what employers need to consider in response to these challenges.

Additionally, current best practices will be showcased by a number of Arizona employers, from whom participants can learn firsthand what specific responses to the work-life struggles of today’s working families might look like.

Implementing work-life programs is nothing new for Arizona businesses. “Most people would be surprised that Arizona has been a national leader in providing work-life programs to employees since the early eighties,” said Ms. Lingle. This Summit is designed to reopen the dialogue about Arizona’s legacy in this arena, and not just as a one-time event. Panelists and participants will participate in building a Work-Life Roadmap for Arizona, based on responses to a national survey of states designed to define what a family-friendly state should look like. One ongoing project that will be an enduring outcome of this Summit will be to update the Employer’s Work-Life Guide, which was written in 1997 by a task force established by then-Governor Fife Symington.
